Smithfield — Plans are in the works for a 164-unit apartment complex that would be near shopping and restaurants.Harmon and Associates, based in Tryon, wants to build the brick apartments at Peedin Road and Components Drive behind Carolina Premium Outlets and Andrew Corp. The complex would offer one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments with sunrooms or decks. Rents would run from $615 to $870 per month, and amenities would include a clubhouse, a theater room, a car-care center, a pool, a fitness room and a laundry room.“This will offer residents the opportunity to walk or bike to the movies, theaters, restaurants, shopping and [Johnston] Community College,” said Robert Carter of Harmon. “All of these wonderful things about Smithfield are only minutes away.”The Town Council on July 8 agreed to help the company with some of its infrastructure costs. Town Manager Pete Connet estimated the town’s share at $292,000, and said Harmon would be reimbursed as each apartment received its Certificate of Occupancy.“We would like to start construction this fall,” Carter told the council. Harmon will likely submit formal plans for the apartment complex in September.
