July 4 in Smithfield
The annual “Friends of the 4th” fireworks celebrations will be held Friday, July 4, on the Town Commons on Front Street in downtown Smithfield. The celebration will feature games and music. Brien Barbour will play folk music from 5 till 6 p.m. The Main Event Band will play beach and Top 40 music from 6 till 9:30. Fireworks will follow.

Lunch Bunch music
The Tobacco Farm Life Museum in Kenly will celebrate its 25th anniversary June 28-29, with exhibits, vendors, music and food.

The museum will offer heritage demonstrations, such as horse-shoeing, soap making, butter churning, candle making and blacksmithing by Amos Tucker, the museum’s resident blacksmith. Saturday’s activities are from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m., and Sunday’s activities are from 2 till 4 p.m. All activities are free, but museum donations are appreciated.

Archer Lodge Family Fun Day
The annual Archer Lodge Family Fun Day will be held July 4. The day will start at 7:30 a.m. with a road race registration and continue with the race and marathon walk at 8:30 a.m. A parade will be held at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served until 2 p.m. There will be a horseshoe tournament and Bingo, as well as pony rides from 5 till 7 p.m. and dinner from 5 till 8 p.m. The Miss Archer Lodge pageant will be held at 6:30 p.m. For more information, go to archerlodge.org.

July 4 celebration
A ringing of the bells celebration will take place at the Coats Museum & Belltower, located at 3317 Old Fairground Road in the McGee’s Crossroads Community, July 4. The program begins at 11 a.m. with the Black Creek Singers, followed by ringing of the bells at noon. Spring Fling event
Reins From Above will hold its annual Spring Fling fund-raising event from 8 a.m. till 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at 12160 N.C. 42 East in Kenly. The event will include a yard sale, pony rides and food. For more information, call 938-1556.

Band performs

Lunch music on tap
The next performance scheduled for the Music for the Lunch Bunch series is at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 26, at First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield. The students of Julie Stewart of Kindermusik of Clayton & Voice of Clayton will perform, and Tom Howerton will read poetry. This is the 14th year that either Julie Stewart or her students have participated in the Lunch Bunch series.

Art on display
Three artists will display their artwork in July at The Clayton Center at 111 E. 2nd St. in Clayton. Juliann Butcher of Clayton, David Crews of Raleigh and Phil Pyle of Clayton are the artists. Step show at WJHS
The Johnston County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. will host its Graduate Step Show on Saturday, June 28, at West Johnston High School’s auditorium.
