Benson — The town has received an $886,000 grant for a sewer project. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development presented the check to Mayor William Massengill last Tuesday. In all, the town plans to spend $2.9 million to build a pipeline that will funnel treated wastewater to CPC Nursery. The nursery will use up to 500,000 gallons a day in the summer and up to 150,000 gallons in the winter. That means Benson will dump less treated water — and less nitrogen — into waterways.“USDA Rural Development understands that for a community to improve its economic opportunity and quality of life, basic community infrastructure is essential,” said Rural Development state director John Cooper. “These funds will help improve the health and safety of the Benson area.”Other funding for the project will come from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, which has pledged $1.3 million, and the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, which has promised $750,000. Town Manager Keith Langdon said construction would start when all of the money was in hand, most likely this fall.Rural Development has spent more than $91 billion to foster growth in homeownership, business development and community and technology infrastructure since 2001. Of the billions spent, almost $180 million has gone to Johnston projects.James Andrew, administrator for the Rural Utilities Program, praised Benson officials for their progressive thinking. “Our job is to see that the money you sent to Washington is invested,” he said. “It is an investment. Your tax money is just coming back to you. I am looking forward to seeing what the result of this money will be.”Although U.S. Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr were unable to attend the presentation, they sent their congratulations. Reggie Holley, deputy state director for Dole, has roots in Benson. He said the sewer project would promote the success of the town’s businesses and improve the quality of life for residents.“Senator Dole is impressed with today’s accomplishments and the team who achieved it,” Holley said.“She applauds the hardworking citizens who have prevailed yet again. In this instance, your tax dollars are leveraged wisely, and your share of taxes has returned in the form of this investment we now celebrate.”
